Blizzard Entertainment is taking World of Warcraft players back to the early days of
Azeroth with the announcement of World of Warcraft: Forever, a new edition
designed to expand the classic Vanilla WoW experience while keeping the spirit
and progression of the original game.
Set during the early era of the legendary MMORPG, World of Warcraft: Forever will
introduce a large amount of new content without abandoning the foundations that
made the original World of Warcraft so popular. The new edition will feature
additional zones, hundreds of new activities, more than 1,000 quests, new
dungeons, raids, gameplay systems, and an entirely new playable race.
For longtime World of Warcraft fans, the project represents a return to the game's
roots while offering a fresh adventure for players who want something beyond the
original Vanilla WoW experience.
World of Warcraft: Forever Expands the Classic Experience
When the original World of Warcraft launched in 2004, players entered a massive
version of Azeroth where exploration, character progression, group content, and
discovering the world were central parts of the experience.
Blizzard says World of Warcraft: Forever is built around that same philosophy.
The game will maintain the original level 1–60 progression system, allowing players
to experience the journey through Azeroth while discovering new content along
the way. Rather than simply reproducing the classic game, Blizzard is expanding it
with new locations, quests, enemies, rewards, and gameplay opportunities.
One of the biggest additions is a collection of more than 1,000 new quests
distributed throughout the entire level range. These quests are expected to
provide players with additional reasons to explore different parts of Azeroth while
leveling their characters.
The new edition will also introduce nine additional dungeons and new raid content,
giving players more opportunities to participate in challenging group activities
and earn powerful rewards.
A New Playable Race: The Skyborne
Perhaps the most surprising feature announced for World of Warcraft: Forever is the
introduction of a brand-new playable race called the Skyborne.
Unlike traditional Horde or Alliance races, the Skyborne are described as a neutral
elven race. This means players will have a new character option that exists outside
the traditional faction structure that has defined much of World of Warcraft.
The Skyborne will also have their own starting experience on Zephras Isle, giving
players a new way to begin their journey in Azeroth.
The new race adds another layer of customization and exploration to the classic
World of Warcraft formula. Players who enjoy creating new characters will have
another option to explore, while longtime fans may be interested in discovering
how the Skyborne fit into the world and its history.
New Zones Bring More of Azeroth to Explore
World of Warcraft: Forever will add three new zones to the game: Mount Hyjal,
Zephras Isle, and The Riverglades.
Each area is expected to provide new quests, enemies, story elements, and
exploration opportunities.
Mount Hyjal is particularly interesting for longtime Warcraft fans because of its
importance in the broader Warcraft universe. Zephras Isle will serve as the starting
location for the Skyborne, while The Riverglades will introduce another unexplored
part of Azeroth.
Blizzard has not revealed every detail about the zones that will receive major
improvements. However, the developer has confirmed that the game will feature
visual and technical upgrades designed to make the classic world feel more
immersive.
These improvements include updated lighting, global illumination, volumetric
particle effects, a redesigned water rendering system, and real-time shadows.
The result should be a classic-inspired Azeroth that retains its original identity
while benefiting from more modern graphical technology.
New Dungeons, Raids and Battleground Content
Group gameplay remains one of the most important elements of World of Warcraft,
and Forever will significantly expand this side of the experience.
The game will launch with nine new dungeons, giving players additional locations
to explore with friends and guild members. Dungeons are expected to provide new
encounters, enemies, bosses, and rewards while encouraging players to work
together.
The expansion will also introduce new raid content. Blizzard has announced two
new raids, including raid experiences designed for larger groups of players.
A new battleground will also take place on the Darkspear Islands, adding another
destination for players interested in competitive player-versus-player gameplay.
With new PvE and PvP content arriving alongside the expanded questing
experience, World of Warcraft: Forever aims to offer enough content for both casual
players and dedicated MMO fans.
More Character Customization and Gameplay Options
Blizzard is also adding several new systems that could change the way players
develop their characters.
One of the announced features is an SD/HD character toggle, allowing players to
switch between different character presentation options.
The game will also introduce additional race and class combinations, giving players
more freedom when creating characters. Blizzard has already teased unusual
combinations, including an Undead Paladin shown in the game's trailer.
For players who enjoy character builds, Forever will include additional skills and
talents. These systems could create new ways to approach combat and character
progression while preserving the original level cap of 60.
New reputation systems will also be available. Players can build relationships with
different factions to unlock new items, rewards, and account-wide benefits.
These additions are designed to give players more long-term goals beyond simply
reaching the maximum level.
World of Warcraft: Forever Beta and Release Date
Blizzard has confirmed that the World of Warcraft: Forever beta will begin on
September 17, giving selected players an opportunity to experience the new
content before the official launch.
The full game is scheduled to launch globally on November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
PST.
World of Warcraft: Forever will be included with an active World of Warcraft
subscription or Game Time, meaning existing subscribers will be able to access the
new edition without purchasing the complete game separately.
As the launch approaches, Blizzard is expected to reveal additional information
through presentations and panels during BlizzCon.
World of Warcraft: Forever Collector's Edition
Blizzard is also offering a physical World of Warcraft: Forever Collector's Edition for
players who enjoy collecting Warcraft merchandise.
The Collector's Edition is designed as a commemorative package celebrating the
early days of Azeroth and the beginning of this new chapter.
In addition to physical collectibles, the package includes the Warcraft Forever
Collection digital code.
This code provides access to the Skyborne Epic Pack, Warcraft III: Reforged, and
Warcraft III: Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom.
Players purchasing the collection will also receive access to the Skyborne race, the
Zephras Isle starting experience, beta access, 30 days of Game Time, and various
cosmetic rewards and bonuses for both World of Warcraft: Forever and modern
World of Warcraft.
Beta access benefits are available during the specified testing period, while other
digital rewards are designed to provide additional value for collectors and
longtime Warcraft players.
Invite-A-Friend Rewards
Blizzard is also introducing a launch-week invitation system connected to
qualifying purchases.
Eligible customers can receive Invite-A-Friend Launch Codes, which can be shared
with friends who want to join World of Warcraft: Forever during the game's launch
period.
The launch-week invitation period will run from November 4 through November 11,
2026, giving players an opportunity to experience the new edition alongside
friends.
Codes are scheduled to be delivered by email beginning October 20, allowing
players time to share them before launch.
This feature could be particularly useful for guilds and groups of friends who want
to start their Forever adventure together.
Digital World of Warcraft: Forever Bundles
Players who are not interested in purchasing the physical Collector's Edition will
also have several digital options.
Blizzard plans to offer separate bundle choices, including the Skyborne Heroic
Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack, and Warcraft Forever Collection.
Depending on the package, players can receive benefits such as access to the
Skyborne race, beta access, Early Name Reservation, 30 days of Game Time,
cosmetic items, and additional in-game bonuses.
These options give players more flexibility depending on how much additional
content they want to receive.
Blizzard Returns to the Beginning of World of Warcraft
The announcement of World of Warcraft: Forever represents an important moment
for Blizzard and the Warcraft franchise.
The project takes place during the first year of the original 2004 World of Warcraft
era, effectively returning players to a period that helped establish the MMORPG as
one of the most influential games in the industry.
Although fans had been speculating about a possible World of Warcraft Classic+
project for some time, Blizzard's official announcement confirms that the company
is taking the classic concept in a new direction.
Warcraft executive Holly Longdale explained that the world itself will play an
important role in Forever, with the philosophy centered around the idea that the
journey matters as much as the destination.
That approach is particularly relevant to the classic World of Warcraft experience,
where exploration, leveling, discovering hidden locations, completing quests, and
meeting other players were fundamental parts of the adventure.
More Blizzard Announcements at BlizzCon
World of Warcraft: Forever was not the only major announcement during the
BlizzCon opening ceremony.
Blizzard also revealed a new campaign for Warcraft 3, marking the first new
campaign for the game in more than 20 years.
Additional announcements included information about a new StarCraft project
expected in 2030, Diablo V planned for 2029, and a Diablo animated television
series being developed for Netflix.
These announcements demonstrate that Blizzard is continuing to invest heavily in
its major franchises while simultaneously looking back at the games that helped
establish the company.
What World of Warcraft: Forever Could Mean for Classic WoW
The biggest question surrounding World of Warcraft: Forever is how successfully
Blizzard can combine nostalgia with new content.
Classic WoW became famous because of its slower progression, exploration-
focused gameplay, challenging group activities, and strong social elements. Adding
new quests, zones, races, dungeons, raids, and character systems could give
veteran players new reasons to return.
At the same time, Blizzard will need to preserve the identity of Vanilla WoW while
introducing modern improvements.
If the balance works, World of Warcraft: Forever could become an attractive option
for both longtime Warcraft players and people discovering classic WoW for the first
time.
With more than 1,000 new quests, three new zones, nine dungeons, two raids, a new
playable race, expanded character options, improved visuals, and additional
progression systems, the project is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious
additions to the classic World of Warcraft experience.
World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026. For players who
have been waiting for a fresh adventure built around the foundations of Vanilla
WoW, Blizzard's latest project could offer a new reason to return to Azeroth and
experience the world where the Warcraft journey began.
