Powerful 7.7 Earthquake Rocks Indonesia’s Flores Island, Triggering Tsunami Warning

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s eastern

 Flores region early Saturday, August 15, causing deaths, damaging buildings and

 sending thousands of residents toward higher ground after authorities issued a

 temporary tsunami warning.


The shallow earthquake shook communities across East Nusa Tenggara, with

 emergency teams beginning search-and-rescue operations as reports of collapsed

 structures, landslides, power outages and disrupted communications emerged. The

 disaster has once again highlighted Indonesia’s exposure to major natural hazards

 because of its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.



Strong Earthquake Strikes Near Flores

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, known as BMKG,

 recorded the main earthquake in the early morning at a depth of roughly 10 to 15

 kilometers. The epicenter was located offshore near the northern part of Flores

 Island, around 68 kilometers northwest of Ende.


Because the earthquake was relatively shallow and occurred beneath the sea,

 authorities immediately monitored the possibility of dangerous tsunami waves.


The intense shaking was felt across several parts of East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa

 Tenggara and South Sulawesi. Some residents reported that the shaking continued

 for close to a minute, causing panic as people rushed outside their homes and

 businesses.


The powerful tremor was followed by numerous aftershocks, adding to fears among

 residents who were already dealing with damaged buildings and blocked roads.



Deaths and Injuries Reported

The number of casualties changed rapidly as rescue teams reached isolated

 communities.


Initial reports from Indonesian authorities indicated several deaths, while later

 emergency officials reported that the toll had risen to at least 20 people, with

 additional injuries and people feared trapped beneath rubble. Rescue workers

 around Maumere reported finding victims among collapsed structures while teams

 attempted to reach areas closer to the earthquake’s epicenter.


Officials warned that the casualty figure could change as emergency crews gain

 access to remote areas.


Nagekeo, one of the areas closest to the epicenter, proved particularly difficult to

 reach. Landslides blocked roads, while communication problems complicated

 coordination between local authorities and rescue teams.


Around 2,000 residents were reported to have evacuated Nagekeo, while damage

 was recorded at homes, warehouses and government facilities. Traffic congestion

 and electricity disruptions were also reported in parts of the region.



Residents Flee Toward Higher Ground

The earthquake created immediate concern along the coast because of the

 possibility of a tsunami.


Residents in coastal communities rushed away from low-lying areas and moved

 toward hills and other elevated locations. Some left on foot, while others used

 motorcycles, cars and pickup trucks to escape potentially dangerous coastal

 zones.


Reports that the sea had temporarily moved back from the shoreline added to the

 anxiety, as unusual sea-level changes can sometimes precede tsunami waves.


The Indonesian authorities later lifted the tsunami warning after monitoring the

 ocean and determining that the immediate threat had diminished. Small tsunami

 waves of less than one meter were nevertheless recorded in several areas.


Authorities continued to advise residents to remain cautious and avoid entering

 damaged buildings because strong aftershocks can weaken already unstable

 structures.



Rescue Operations Face Major Challenges

Emergency crews immediately began searching collapsed buildings for survivors.


However, the response was complicated by the region’s geography. Flores contains

 mountainous areas where landslides can quickly block roads and isolate

 communities. In Nagekeo, rescuers reportedly struggled to reach the area by

 vehicle because roads had been obstructed.


Alternative rescue routes, including travel by sea, were considered as emergency

 teams attempted to reach communities cut off from normal transportation.


The situation also placed pressure on local hospitals. Medical facilities in affected

 areas moved some patients outside as a precaution, while emergency workers

 assessed structural damage and prepared for additional casualties.


Power outages and communication disruptions created further difficulties for

 residents and emergency personnel.



Damage Reported in Maumere and Surrounding Areas

Maumere, the principal town in Sikka Regency on Flores, was among the locations

 where significant damage was reported.


Video footage from the area showed sections of buildings collapsing and residents

 running through the streets following the violent shaking. Parts of a port facility

 were also damaged.


The affected region contains many smaller towns and villages rather than large

 numbers of high-rise buildings. Even so, the combination of a powerful magnitude

 7.7 earthquake and shallow depth created substantial risks for older or poorly

 reinforced structures.


Officials continued assessing damaged homes, public buildings and other

 infrastructure while rescue workers searched for people who could still be trapped.



Aftershocks Keep Communities on Alert

Following the main earthquake, dozens of aftershocks were recorded.


One of the strongest aftershocks reached approximately magnitude 6.1, increasing

 concerns about additional structural collapses and landslides.


After a major earthquake, residents are often told not to return immediately to

 damaged buildings because subsequent tremors can cause walls, roofs and other

 weakened structures to collapse.


For people who spent the night outdoors or on higher ground, the continuing

 aftershocks created an atmosphere of uncertainty as authorities worked to

 determine the full scale of the destruction.

The latest Flores earthquake also recalls several other devastating disasters in

 Indonesia’s modern history.


In December 2004, a massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra generated the

 Indian Ocean tsunami, killing hundreds of thousands of people across countries

 surrounding the Indian Ocean, including a very large number in Indonesia.


In 2018, another major earthquake struck Sulawesi, followed by a tsunami that

 devastated Palu and surrounding communities. The disaster demonstrated how

 earthquakes can trigger multiple hazards, including tsunami waves, landslides,

 liquefaction and building collapses.


These historical disasters have encouraged Indonesian authorities to strengthen

 earthquake preparedness, early-warning systems and disaster response

 capabilities.



Tsunami Threat Lifted, But Monitoring Continues

Although the initial tsunami warning was cancelled several hours after the

 earthquake, authorities continued monitoring sea levels and aftershocks.


Australia’s tsunami warning center also reported that the earthquake did not pose

 a tsunami threat to mainland Australia or its territories.


For communities in Flores, however, the cancellation of the warning did not

 immediately end the emergency. Rescue operations, damage assessments and

 evacuation efforts continued.


Officials faced the difficult task of reaching remote areas while determining how

 many people had been injured, killed or trapped.

The hours and days following a major earthquake are critical for search-and-rescue

 teams.


Emergency workers will continue looking through damaged structures for survivors

 while authorities assess homes, roads, hospitals, ports and public facilities.
