Tensions escalated in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday as protesters and
counter-protesters converged outside City Hall, highlighting deep national
divisions over immigration, religion, political extremism, and public safety. The
confrontation unfolded amid heightened scrutiny of political demonstrations
across the United States, drawing attention to how rhetoric, symbolism, and social
media influence can rapidly ignite unrest.
At the center of the controversy was Jake Lang, an out-of-state right-wing
influencer and pardoned participant in the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot. Lang’s
presence sparked immediate opposition from local activists, community
organizers, and immigrant rights supporters, many of whom viewed his message
as deliberately provocative and harmful to Minneapolis’ diverse population.
A City on Edge as Demonstrations Collide
Minneapolis City Hall became the focal point for competing demonstrations
Saturday afternoon. Lang arrived accompanied by a small group of supporters,
while hundreds of counter-protesters gathered in opposition. Police deployed an
armored vehicle and officers in tactical gear, signaling authorities’ concern that the
situation could escalate.
Law enforcement officers repeatedly instructed demonstrators to remain off the
streets, attempting to prevent clashes as chants, music, and megaphones filled the
air. While Lang attempted to address the crowd, his remarks were largely drowned
out by counter-protesters expressing solidarity with Muslim, Somali, and

enforcement. Jasen Johnson, who traveled from greater Minnesota to join Lang,
defended the gathering by emphasizing what he called “legal immigration” and
invoking religious and nationalist language.
“God bless America, God bless President Trump, and God bless legal immigration,”
Johnson said during the rally.
However, critics argued that the march relied heavily on anti-Muslim rhetoric and
inflammatory symbolism, particularly given reports that Lang intended to burn a
Quran near City Hall. Community leaders warned that such acts were designed to
provoke fear and outrage rather than foster constructive dialogue.
Drew Harmon of Minnesota 50501, one of the organizers behind the larger counter-
protest titled “Defend Our Neighbors,” said the group’s purpose was to protect the
community and prevent intimidation.
“People are worried about these individuals coming into our towns solely to
disrupt things,” Harmon said. “We’re here to defend our immigrant community.”
Violence Allegations and Conflicting Accounts
As the afternoon progressed and portions of the crowd began to move, tensions
intensified. Aerial footage captured by CHOPPER 5 appeared to show Lang being
pushed or struck before falling to the ground. Another video, published by
MostlyPeaceful.Media, showed a man identified as Lang being repeatedly kicked
while inside a vehicle.
Despite these images circulating widely online, organizers of the “Defend Our
Neighbors” protest emphasized their commitment to non-violence. They stated
that they deliberately chose not to march as a group in order to avoid escalation
and noted that individuals arrived and departed throughout the day, making it
difficult to identify those responsible for any assaults.
“We are very committed to non-violence and not taking the bait,” Harmon said
earlier. “We want to stand strong with discipline and resolve.”
The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed it was aware of social media reports
alleging assaults but said no official police report had been filed as of the latest
update. No arrests have been made, and officers reported that individuals who
appeared injured left the area before police could make contact.
Disturbing Garage Incident Raises Alarm
Separate from the events involving Lang, video footage later emerged showing a
man being chased into a parking garage by a group described as anti-ICE agitators.
The unidentified man was allegedly struck in the head with a flagpole, resulting in
a visible, bleeding wound.
As the man attempted to leave the area, the crowd followed him, shouting insults
and accusations. At one point, a protester used a megaphone to mockingly suggest
the man needed “mental help,” while others hurled slurs and obscenities.
“I’m trying to be done, but you guys keep harassing me,” the man said calmly, his
jacket soaked in blood.
Although one woman in the crowd asked if he needed help, which he declined
politely, the confrontation continued as he entered his car. Video shows members
of the group striking the vehicle with flagpoles as he drove away. The cause of the
encounter remains unclear, and authorities have not identified the individuals
involved.
Lang’s Claims and Police Response
Following the incidents, Lang posted on social media platform X, claiming he had
been stabbed during the confrontation but that a plate carrier he was wearing
prevented serious injury. He described the event as an attempted lynching and
accused city leadership and police of standing down.
“I was literally lynched,” Lang wrote, claiming he required staples to close a head
wound.
The Minneapolis Police Department responded by reiterating that it encourages
anyone who experiences assaultive behavior to file an official report and provide
detailed information. Police emphasized that, without victim reports,
investigations are limited.
Broader Protests and Federal Response
While tensions unfolded at City Hall, additional clashes were reported outside the
Whipple Federal Building, where anti-ICE protesters confronted federal agents.
Demonstrators shouted and cursed as law enforcement attempted to maintain a
perimeter around the building.
As night fell, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office vehicles were positioned to block
nearby roads, signaling concerns that unrest could spread. These confrontations
followed a week of heightened emotions after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was
fatally shot by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation, further inflaming
protests against immigration authorities.
In response to the escalating situation, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety
announced that the National Guard had been mobilized and placed on standby to
support local law enforcement and emergency management agencies. However,
officials confirmed that Guard units had not yet been deployed to city streets.
