TEHACHAPI, CA - Rapper Tory Lanez, currently serving a decade-long sentence for
the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, was hospitalized on Monday morning
after being stabbed by a fellow inmate at the California Correctional Institution in
Tehachapi. The incident, which occurred within a housing unit, is currently under
investigation by state corrections officials.
Authorities confirmed that Daystar Peterson, the rapper's legal name, was attacked
at approximately 7:20 a.m. Prison staff at the California Correctional Institution,
located about 75 miles north of Los Angeles, immediately responded to the
incident. According to a statement from California Department of Corrections and
Rehabilitation (CDCR) spokesperson Pedro Calderón Michel, staff “immediately
responded, activated 911 and began medical aid” to Peterson.
Law enforcement sources familiar with the incident reported that Lanez was
stabbed with a self-made shank in a prison yard. Following the initial medical aid
provided by prison staff, Peterson was transported by ambulance to a nearby
hospital for further treatment.
While official details regarding the severity of his injuries have not been publicly
released by the CDCR, multiple media outlets, including TMZ which was the first to
break the news, have cited sources indicating that Lanez sustained non-life-
threatening injuries and is in stable condition. However, a report from the New York
Post mentioned sources who claimed the rapper was stabbed multiple times in the
face.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this early stage of the
investigation. The California Correctional Institution's investigative unit, in
conjunction with the Kern County District Attorney's Office, has launched a probe
into the stabbing. The Office of the Inspector General has also been notified, a
standard procedure for such serious incidents within the correctional system.
As of late Monday, a legal representative for Peterson had not publicly commented
on the stabbing incident.
The 32-year-old Canadian artist is incarcerated after being sentenced in August
2023 to 10 years in state prison. This sentence followed his conviction in December
2022 on three felony counts related to the July 12, 2020, incident where he shot
Grammy-winning artist Megan Thee Stallion (legal name Megan Pete) in the feet.
The charges included assault with a semi-automatic firearm, illegal possession of a
firearm, and negligent discharge of a gun.
The trial saw Megan Thee Stallion provide emotional testimony about the events of
that night. She recounted that the shooting occurred after an argument escalated
while they were leaving a pool party at Kylie Jenner's Hollywood Hills home.
According to her testimony, the dispute began in a vehicle with Lanez, his
bodyguard, and her friend Kelsey Harris, reportedly stemming from an argument
about their prior intimate relationship and verbal insults exchanged regarding
their music careers.
Megan Thee Stallion testified that she demanded to be let out of the SUV, and as
she walked away, Lanez fired a gun at her feet, shouting for her to "dance." The
attack resulted in her sustaining bullet fragments in both feet, necessitating
surgery.
Throughout the legal process and since his conviction, Lanez has maintained his
innocence regarding the shooting and has not issued an apology. The case became
a focal point of discussion within the hip-hop community, leading to public
divisions and support for both individuals from various artists. Some even penned
letters to the court advocating for a more lenient sentence for Lanez.
Even from behind bars, Lanez has continued to face legal scrutiny from Megan
Thee Stallion. In December 2024, reports indicated that Megan Pete filed a request
for a restraining order against Peterson, alleging that he has persisted in a
"campaign of harassment" against her. This alleged harassment reportedly
involves utilizing online trolls and bloggers to undermine her credibility and
spread defamatory information. In a significant development in January 2025, a
judge reportedly granted Megan Thee Stallion a five-year restraining order against
Lanez, effective until January 9, 2030. The order was reportedly based on a
"sustained burden of proof" presented by Megan's legal team regarding alleged
unlawful violence, credible threats of violence, or stalking.
Lanez's time in prison has also seen other controversies. Earlier this year, there
were reports of correctional officers confiscating recording equipment from his
cell. The rapper had reportedly been hinting at the release of new music recorded
while incarcerated, purportedly for an upcoming project titled "Peterson."
The stabbing incident at the California Correctional Institution serves as a stark
reminder of the inherent dangers within the prison system and adds another
complex layer to the ongoing public and legal narrative surrounding Tory Lanez.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances
of the attack and identify the individual responsible. Further details are
anticipated as the investigation progresses.
